Stop Micromanaging Teachers

A Principal's Guide to Ruining Teachers
(Especially those who are new.)

​Micromanage them. 
Hover.
Nitpick. 
Badger.

Then watch them:
Leave your school...
Leave the profession...

We can't afford to lose good teachers,
so we have to rethink our leadership.

It's important
to give them space.
Resist the urge to interfere
​in their classrooms.

It's time to realize that saving them from mistakes stifles development.

​Try allowing them to dictate
the frequency & length
of your check-ins.

Encourage them to experiment & develop
their own teaching style.

Share expectations
& allow them to be met in a variety of ways.
Offer formal feedback per policy
​& helpful advice upon request.
​
​Avoid the temptation & tendency
to hyper-focus on shortcomings.
As leaders, we all grew best
​when we felt trusted, needed, & valued.
